Rather than painting and sculpture, you could just use an "artwork" type, so that you can take advantage of the "art subject" property (see Laocoön and Laocoön and His Sons for an example of how this works in the art domain). For the books, I'd suggest something more generic, along the lines of "written work", since the written sources should include poems and plays (and possibly prose works? I can't recall for sure, now).

I did get confused with the two types, and you helped with your explation, so do I get this right (to use baseball):

* The World Series is a "recurring event"

* The 2008 World Series is an "event"

If that's the case, then football is littered with these so could do with some clarification.

I guess at the same time, does the "2008 MLB Season" then is a "sports league season", with "2008 World Series" as it's "championship"?

But then for the 2008 World Series (http://www.freebase.com/view/guid/9202a8c04000641f8000000006b8b47a), I don't get why it's a "sports league championship event", and an "event". Why doesn't one include the other?

A football league in the soccer sense, is an event as such, as a:

* it recurs every year

* has a start date

* has "things" invovled (teams rather than people, which change each year - unlike some American sports I guess)

Perhaps event isn't the best type to include, perhaps football league just needs beefed out with the relevant properties instead? I can think and make proper suggestions for discussion...

I'll get to your comments in the football domain but want to thank you for your comments (both here and in the relevant types).

I guess I wasn't really angling for an admin role (although would love to be paid to do this! :P) but mainly that I've been using Freebase for 1 1/2 years (only really adding data for the last week though in anger!) and have been active in my space (Scottish football) for 5 years and a computer programmer for 14 years.

I do want to prove myself as competent, and have started a "scottish football" domain and will start to define types in there that I think work for football, as you say.

At the same time, I don't want to annoy people by posting a load of messages to domains that didn't appear to being looked after, but you've answered that above.

Football Organization: Pointless?

I guess to me on first look, any type that has no properties (but forces you to include another type on the item which fulfils the same purpose) is pointless, but I also see why that may be a bit harsh on it too.

Football organisation's tend to be silly (if I'm being honest), as they tend not to look after all the competitions in a given country (from Scotland for example):

* The Scottish FA, only look after the internation team, and the cup competition

* The Scottish Football League, look after the lower leagues, and the league cup

* The Scottish Premier League, only look after the top division

Also, UEFA has "members" (the countries assocation), as does FIFA, whereas the "sports association" doesn't have these properties (only teams).

Football is such a specific sport that it deserves it's own type, but feel that is should extend the given type (sports association in this case), rather than require both to be added...

Still not sure of the best way of explaining this in words like this, if that makes sense!

Hi degsy. I already replied to a bunch of your comments in the football domain but I wanted to clarify a few things here.

First up, danm and aseem were the admins on the football domain but they don't have much time to work on it. So cheunger and I have become admins there and we can now make changes to the schema.

Generally we don't appoint admins who don't have schema modelling experience on Freebase as it's easy to break things horribly if you're not careful. So if you'd like to become an admin in this domain the way to move towards that would be to work on some modeling in your own private user domain(s), and get the hang of how our schema editor works, and so on.

However, we could make you an "Expert" in the football domain, which allows you to make changes to documentation in the domain and recognises your knowledge in the area.

Military conflict already includes the type "event" which has "contains events" and "contained by" properties. So you can say that World War II included the Invasion of Normandy, or whatever.

The content is also seemingly different, but I'm not entirely sure how to explain why they're not the same thing. :) I wonder if there is a merging point in them though..

Hey, I joined freebase not too long ago and have been using it to build an app that lets users mark which films they have watched or own on dvd or blu-ray. I've run into the issue of TV shows not being in the Film category, which leads to my question.

Is there a possibility of a data type that tracks home video releases? This would be a sub-type for both Film and TV shows. I realize that may be a lot of work, so it might be far down the road, but I thought I'd suggest it.

Overall freebase is a fantastic service. I really hope to see it take off in a big way.

Currently, we don't have a generalized sports schema that other sports schemas can inherit from. We can start simple and grow into that if necessary. My suggestion would be to keep the football (soccer) stuff localized to the soccer domain.

Looks fairly pointless, yes. It's what we call a "bucket" -- something where the only useful semantics gained from typing something as this are that a thing "is-a" whatever.

At the very least this type should include "Sports Association".

Can we think of any properties that a football organization should have that are special to it? For instance, do they relate to teams, or to competitions? Can you say that teams are members of a football organization, or that a competition is run by them?

OK, some thoughts...

We could simply include the sports league championship type, which would cause all competitions to be co-typed as sports league championships, but are all competitions championships? I don't know the semantics here.

Another thing to think about wrt included types... are such competitions events, recurring events, or anything like that? I note that some are already co-typed as such. It seems reasonable that any given competition would have a start and end date and whatnot.

Or... another thought... should this type be used for "World Cup" or for "2008 World Cup"? Seems to me we've got the event/recurring event pattern going on here. Perhaps we should have two types?

Ok, so I added Divinity, Hero, Source, Painting and Sculpture.

The way I see things:

- Sources are myths/legends, paintings, and sculptures (and others as we add them)

- Everything else is a mythological entity

- Commons traits of Heroes go in Hero; common traits of Divinities go in Divinity. The Greek and Roman versions of this include properties which link to their equivalent if there is such an equivalent.

- Mythological entity gives a list of sources it is in. Sources can be modern or contemporary (to the Greco-roman period).

I'm also a computer programmer (broad term I know!), so I'm interested in this from many angles one of which is how to get my data in here (for others) and then to use it from my own site to keep it fresh (from others).

I'll keep doing what I'm doing, but already finding duplicate types listed for some items, and trying not to become too frustrated, and to help out like you said.

Past team rosters are one thing, but also past competitions seem to be neglected (in my interested area) which I'm trying to think about how to correct.

One question, is it best to suggest specific types (football/soccer) ones from the existing types (which seem to be great for NBA, MLB, etc) or to suggest changes to the existing "sports" types?

You're right - a good way to start contributing is by exactly what you've been doing. Start with a post to get the /soccer admins (and hopefully others) involved. There are some current schema issues that are outstanding, one of which happens to be how to represent past team rosters. Posting suggestions for changes will at least get the ball rolling. Additionally, you can broadcast harder schema related problems to a wider audience by joining the data-modeling list (here)

As for the suggestions from 2007, I don't know what the blockage is/was. It could be some combination of dropping the ball, lost interest, no follow-up, no time and/or no resolution. I'll have to research further what these suggestions were and queue them up, if appropriate. However, I hope this won't stop you from posting your suggestions; community input is invaluable, even if it's just commenting/critiquing other people's suggestion.

I guess I have lots of recommendations for changes, but my problem was that some suggestions from 2007 hadn't been actioned, so didn't want to waste my time (or others) if nothing was going to come of them.

I have spent 5 years gathering data for my site, and have a good idea of what data/properties I have, so will continue to make suggestions where applicable, on the relevant type pages - I assume that's the correct way?

Would love to help out "officially" in some capacity, especially where football is concerned.

I've created an Honorary Title domain, which has types for titles, and orders, and people who give and have those titles. I'm hoping that it will help to combat the fact that titles are often put down as employers or awards, so our way of describing them isn't consistent.

Another way to detect recent changes is to monitor the RSS feed of the history for that type. For example, the Film type history feed is:

The Netflix IDs have been added and updated extensively since the data dump. I would recommend going to filter view (http://www.freebase.com/view/film/film), adding all the columns from the left that you want, including the Netflix ID, and then "Use these results" --> "Save as TSV/CSV" to produce your own version of the latest film data. Please post if you have trouble doing this.

Ah, the enumerated type is trying to "force" you to pick a choice. What I do to remove the value is delete the current text in the edit popup, wait for the popup choices appear, then click off of the edit popup. The popup choices will disappear and then you can click save and the value will be disconnected. Definitely not desired functionality - I'll bring it up with client design.

As for removing values, it applies for all properties.

I guess it depends on if the property value is linked with another topic? So it probably doesn't matter for date of birth, but does for employer.

Not sure where gender falls into it, but the problem with removing the value is seems to want a value and there's no obvious way to remove it.

Well... detyping a type from a topic is not necessarily "clean". If a topic is erronously typed with property values, the cleanest way is to detype is to remove all the property values first and then detype the type. Otherwise, you get property artifacts left behind (the link between the topic and the property/value is not unlinked). As an example. see my topic on sandbox - I typed myself as a location, added a containment, then detyped without removing property values.

We're trying to get clean detyping functionality into the client soon, as well as have backend validators run periodically. However, in the meantime, I advocate removing property values first before detyping.

This isn't necessarily a bug, but how can you remove the value in the Gender field from the Person type?

For example, I want to remove the Person type from the Bass Brothers topic, but I need to remove the "Male" from the Gender. But I can't figure out how to do that.

If I clear out the value, it wants me to pick something from the list. I cleared the value and then quickly hit enter, but I don't think the form likes that option as it keeps the value pick list open even when the box is closed :) [of course that disappears as soon as I leave the page]

Is there a way to allow someone to blank out a field for cases like this?

It looks like there are two problems here: one an unclear UI, and the other an actual possible bug.

The bit about creating episode numbers as new is because the episode numbers are just text values, not actual topics; the “1” for the first episode is not going to be reconciled with an existing topic called “1.” The UI should be clearer about what is happening with text and number values, however.

The bit about the episode numbers not taking is a real problem.

I will add both of these issues to our bug tracking system.

When you import a list of episodes to a tv series or season, once you've reconciled all of the episodes, on the next page it says the episodes will be reconciled with existing episode etc., but all the episode numbers are going to be created as new topics. And on the next page, it says they've been created, and the links go back to the home page.

It also appears to be a problem on the actor, character and season pages (and presumably any more where they appear), except in those cases, no More button is available, but if you go to Stargate SG-1 Season 8 for example, Richard Dean Anderson is in that season, but on the list he's no in season 7, but if you go to season 7, season 8 isn't listed, if you get my drift.

I agree with you on Musical Artist, I overlooked the fact that it is a broader term than Musician. For now, its probably safe to just leave it out but at some point in the future I'd like to tie some of these topics to UMBEL subject concepts so that the "Musical Artist" type would be equivalent to a "Musical Performer" topic which would map to what they call the "MusicPerformanceAgent" subject concept.

Why is Constitutional Convention equivalent to Election? That’s wrong.

I don’t think a Musician is equivalent to a Musical Artist; a musical artist may be a band or a DJ. Recording artist would be a better equivalent, but there isn’t really a topic for that notion in Freebase.

Otherwise, all of the domains for which I’m an administrator look good.
