Just following up belatedly as I'm taking on some work in this domain.

Military conflict already includes the type "event" which has "contains events" and "contained by" properties. So you can say that World War II included the Invasion of Normandy, or whatever.

Does this suffice?

Yeah, your Tall Ship type has some very useful properties, but the commons Ship type seems more appropriate to use for my scuba diving domain. Once I finish up with my Marine Creature and Ecoregion types, I'm going to develop schema for Dive Site. One type of dive site are shipwrecks. I've begun schema for a Shipwreck type, which I'll ultimately use with my Dive Site type. I would love to inherit ship length for free, as you could make some fun queries (show me all shipwreck dive sites in Florida with a hull length greater than 100 feet).

Agreed, though those can be a bit fiddly. Wikipedia infoboxes should give us some tips though. I did something similar for my Tall Ship type: length at waterline, sparred length, beam, sail area, etc. Not all work for non-sailing ships of course.

Noticable oversight. It must have been forgotten when we were merging the various private boat domains/types.

My proposal would be to add a boat_owner property to ship, pointing to a CVT of with a time span of ownership and an owner property (with an expected type of boat_owner.) That way various types of owners can be co-typed as boat_owners (racing syndicates, individuals, governments) and the transfer of ownership can be traced. Does that make sense? (I will add it to sandbox so we can play with it there.)

Ironically modeling boat ownership was a topic I brought up at one of the first user group meetings.

We have no plans for another way to represent citation data. We always have to be careful about schema bloat, but in this case it seems useful and important to source casualty statistics.

I do think the source in this case should be "who estimated it" (the government or organization), rather than "who printed it" (the book or journal).

My concern is that modeling it this way sets a precedent for putting sourcing data in a CVT for any property, since a great deal of the information we store is similarly dependent. Certainly, many numeric values are going to vary based on who's doing the measuring and how, and I can envision people wanting citation information on practically any kind of assertion. I think the data team has been working on ways of handling attributions, but I don't know if they've addressed this case.

Why not just handle casualty souces in exactly the same way? Cite the text that the caualty number was drawn from.In many cases tht is what is needed to make it a useful number, since the context of the text is required to make sense of what the number means and how it was estimated.

Attribution of data-sources is not something we've completely solved yet. The "source" property for quotations is not exactly the same thing: It's the text that the quotation is drawn from, rather than a citation for an authority that asserts that the quotation is from that source. (And in many cases, the source of a quotation is in dispute, so this is itself a datum that could have an attribution.)

Splitting wars and battles is something that's come up before (although I can't find a reference to it anywhere, so maybe it was just a conversation I had). How do you envision the split? What properties would each have that makes them unique from each other?

I'd be interested in working on this as well, since i have a long-standing interest in collecting early modern military firearems. I think the various weapon types, like swords, rifles, handguns, and knives, to just list the major small arms, would need their own domains, as the schemata for each weapon type would probably be fairly complex and wouldn't necessarily overlap. Fortunately there are some good reference works to start from, like Jane's Infantray Weapons.

Or, I suppose you could argue that everyone should be linked to the University itself, but I think that's less useful in the long run (if I'm interested in directors who went to the Yale School of Drama, I'd rather query that than to have to filter Yale Univ. grads by degree [MFA] and field of study [directing, drama, acting, etc.]).

It does complicate queries, it's true. Ideally everyone would be linked to the school they graduated from. That said, it's useful to be able to say that someone graduated from Yale University, even if you don't know which school they attended.
