Ty Semaka has been designing posters, CD artwork, and T-shirts for the OpenBSD project. He has also been writing songs for the project. CDs of his music are distributed by the OpenBSD project, making them both a software project and a music publisher/record label.

The MusicBrainz data has "OpenBSD" as the musical group for this album, but I think it's more accurate to say that the album is by Ty Semaka and published/distributed by the OpenBSD project. In particular, I think the MusicBrainz data should be attached to the OpenBSD software project (which I've cotyped as a Record Label).

Band membership has a beginning and end date; former members should have an end date, although it's true that in many cases Freebase won't have that data. But, in my opinion, splitting the membership roster into separate properties for current and former members would cause a bigger problem for cases where we don't know a musician's status -- it forces us to arbitrarily make an assertion (current or former) when we lack the knowledge to make that assertion. At least with the current model, you can say that someone was or is in a band when you don't know the current line-up.

I think the current model will be a little clearer if we get the ability to store the notion of "current" or "present" in date fields.

Bear in mind, that "bands" are typed "Musical Artist" (even though that sounds like it would describe an individual) "Musical Group" and "Musical Group Member" are types used to create a group.

I don't administer this domain but I do play in a working band. Hey, that sounds pretty good for a type "Working Musical Artist" which would impart the properties that pertain to a gigging/for-hire band or individual.

Just a thought. You are free to create your own type that has the properties that you think are needed. Here is a help topic on publishing types (so other's can see and use them)

I run a website that includes a directory of wedding bands. The things someone wants to know about a wedding band are significantly different from what one might want to know about a popular band. Wedding bands, for instance, must have some contact info, potentially: snailmail, email, web, tel, fax, etc. They need a description, and of course, there should be a way for people to post about the group--are they good? expensive? worth hiring again?

How would this sort of information be captured in "musical groups" as defined here?
