Wikipedia tends to classify by the broadest institution, so there are a lot of actors associated with Yale University instead of the drama school. I think it's fine that we start with the lower-precision classification and as data becomes available, replace it with the more specific.

I also agree that this would be useful. I thought I made a similar suggestion a couple months ago but could not find it. Part of this suggestion was that "Board members" and other structured classes of membership should be co-typed as "Member". For example, Organization_board_member is linked as a property of Organization but is not linked to "Member" in any way. Aren't board members always members?

I think there is. Since membership is a mediated property, the "grade" of membership would hang off the "organization membership" type. There could be a "class" property that links to an instance of a "membership class" instance, for which we would have to create this new type. Comments?

Remember that Freebase included types aren’t a strict subtyping mechanism; you can always remove a type from an instance. So a programming meet could be typed as an Organization, and then Employer can be removed.
It was felt (by whoever did this—I’m not sure who) that *most* organizations likely to be in Freebase are also employers. If you disagree, it would be interesting to see how many organizations that you think are noteworthy enough to belong here are not employers. Maybe a random sample. Can you post some numbers?

A large number of organizations have varying grade of memberships and associations available for it's members. For an example see Institute of Structural Engineers.

This matters greatly in the type of organisation where the difference between being a Chartered member or not has legal implications in the work of the member.

However, perhaps the Organization type should be altered to have a 'Focus' property where 'Linux', 'Perl Programming', 'First Aid', 'Scouting' etc. etc. could be listed? I think this might be better to prevent Type creep.

Or, I suppose you could argue that everyone should be linked to the University itself, but I think that's less useful in the long run (if I'm interested in directors who went to the Yale School of Drama, I'd rather query that than to have to filter Yale Univ. grads by degree [MFA] and field of study [directing, drama, acting, etc.]).

It does complicate queries, it's true. Ideally everyone would be linked to the school they graduated from. That said, it's useful to be able to say that someone graduated from Yale University, even if you don't know which school they attended.

Well, what we'd have to do is insert a CVT between the organization and its members. This can be done, of course, but has some implications (i.e., it requires a data migration and will break any queries using these properties). It seems that organizations often have related topics which is slightly different than child types that descend from organizations. This came to mind as as was entering "Stevens and Permanente Creeks Watershed Council." I'd like to link the topic to the topics Stevens Creek and Permanente Creek. If there was a topic "US Highway system" one could imagine being a topic listed at "American Automobile Association," chess for a chess club, and so on. The distinction between child type would be that the watershed council is an environmental organization, chess club a club type.... It's an idea that could use more thought. Thanks!

I am interested in adding some recreational clubs but would like to be able to provide more information about the club. E.g. Outdoor recreational vs. social etc. Also I would like to be able to list the activities the club participates in for example hiking, canoeing, kayaking, cycling, backpacking, skiing, skating, snowshoeing, winter camping etc. There should also be a way to specify multiple activities.

Do I add an existig type(s) that I can't seem to find or does it require a modification of the organization type?
