    <content type="html">&lt;p&gt;I lost my network connection before I sent my addendum -- I agree that these are not 'family names', but, rather 'families'.  I think the renaming of the topic is not a problem, provided that we create a type called "family".&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
These came from wikipedia categories for surname (and family name).  WP categories are notoriously blurry, hence the problems.  Thanks for the cleanup.  I'll create and document a new type for "family" in the people domain.&lt;br /&gt;

    <content type="html">&lt;p&gt;After renaming the topics (!), the same distinction occurred to me - between family names in the general sense of surnames (see wikipedia category Surnames) and family names in the sense of naming an identifiable family (which might also include cases like 'House of X', 'X Dynasty' etc. - see the wikipedia category Families). I don't know which was used to automatically type as 'family name' on freebase&lt;br /&gt;

Whereas I would expect topics of the type "last name" should refer to the name itself, regardless of specific lineages.&lt;/p&gt;</content>

    <content type="html">&lt;p&gt;Yes they should.  These are topics derived from wikipedia, which normally distinguishes articles with a parenthetical disambiguator which is stripped off when we import it.  In the case of families, very often "family" is added without the parentheses.&lt;br /&gt;
