OTOH, I'm reluctant to create a "scientific research interest" type. The thing/topic/concept/paradigm must be something of its own right, otherwise it wouldn't be in Wikipedia or freebase... :-)

No, seriously, I'm afraid that interesting things will attract simply too much 'type clutter' if every aspect you can look at them is expressed as a type of its own. There's already "book topic", "film topic", now comes "sc. research interest". Well, almost everything could become a 'scientific research interest', including microprocessors, toys, and "bodies of water".

Isn't there a fuzzy enough category for scientific approaches, paradigms etc. on the sub-field level that I could use here - and which expressed something 'about the world' at the same time?

You might be right; "field of study" was created to be used for information about educational degrees, although there are probably many related types that might also use it. Your "research interests" type might be too specific (or maybe I should say of too fine a resolution) for it. You could just create a new type called "scientific research interest"; topics of that type would no doubt eventually accrue other types as various branches of science become modeled. But a type specific to your immediate needs will give you exactly the level of resolution that you want, without forcing you to try to create a conceptual model for all of scientific thought.
