If more than one unit can be used, it makes queries like “Show me all exoplanets with mass less than 1.0 M(jup)” impossible to answer easily.

While it’s true that it’s theoretically possible to do unit conversion if the relationship between M(ear) and M(jup) is known, it suddenly requires the underlying query language to have an intimate knowledge of units and equivalencies, and that’s a huge complication is what so far is a simple and elegant layered model. So unless and until we attack that problem, users entering Earth-sized planets will have to grab the calculator and figure out how many Jupiter-masses they are.

Hello Freebase Gurus,
Is there a provision in Freebase to enable the users to use Earth-mass instead of Jupiter-mass when entering data for exoplanet type?
At the moment, the "Mass" property of the exoplanet type schema is "locked" in to "Jupiter Mass" as its unit of measure. This makes sense because almost all exoplanets currently use M(jup) as it's unit of measure, owing to the fact that the capability of current detection methods is still in its infancy stage and can only resolve Jupiter-sized planets. Hence, it seemed much simpler at the moment to use Jupiter's mass as the reference.
What I would like to do is to provide an option for someone entering data for a new exoplanet to be able to use Earth-mass, (instead of Mjup) as the unit of measure for the exoplanet's mass.
The reason I ask is because a few years down the road when planet-detection techniques mature - there will be a deluge of Earth-sized planet discovery. And because we like to simplify things, people will definitely use the "Earth-mass" for the unit of measure for these new earth-sized exoplanets.
So, as someone having access to modify the exoplanet type, can I design the schema in such a way that either Jupiter Mass or Earth-Mass can be used?
In addition, when a user is entering data specifically for the exoplanet's Mass - would it be possible for Freebase to automatically re-calculate the value when switching the units of measure between Mjup and Earth Mass?
I do not know if the Freebase engine can programmatically do what I have outlined above, but it sure would be cool to be able to do that.

Unfortunately Sandbox tends to get wiped out Monday Evening, PST (USA). You can use my examples for your own inspiration. I'll still hold off on promoting your type until we get some feedback from the data-modeling community over the next week or so.

Discovered will be contained in Planet and Mass & Radius needs a M(jup) & R(jup) units of measurement type created.
