The site itself is PHP-based, and I do a little local caching to make sure that common queries are quick (since the latency on mobile is already an issue!)

Just simple queries into the /film and /music areas of Freebase.

The output is XHTML Mobile Profile / CSS, as recommended by W3C (http://www.w3.org/Mobile/) and all pages should score a 5 on the dotMobi mobile readiness checker (http://ready.mobi/).

The point of the mobile web is to get to the point... while it's cool to be able to surf the whole of IMDB on a high end phone like the iPhone, in all reality you are on the move, impatient, and looking for particular nuggets of information quickly. That's the role this site tries to fulfil.

(I always seem to want to look up actors' and directors' histories after I've seen a film at the cinema - now I can do it before I get home. Perhaps this site is really just for me!)
