Miller was born Johnnie Lucille Ann Collier in Chireno in Nacogdoches County in east Texas, the daughter of Clara Emma (née Birdwell) and John Alfred Collier, a criminal lawyer who represented the Barrow Gang, Machine Gun Kelly, and Baby Face Nelson, among others.
