Jackson was born Anna June Jackson in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Stella Germaine (née Murray) and John Ivan Jackson, who was a beautician. Her mother was of Irish Catholic background and her father was a Yugoslav from Croatia. Jackson trained at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse and The Actor's Studio.
