The title track is generally considered Spears' signature song. It is her best-selling album both in the U.S. and internationally and propelled the then-seventeen-year-old to superstardom during the year of its release. The album also spent an impressive fifty-one weeks in the top ten of the Billboard 200 and sixty weeks in the top twenty. With this, it became the second best-selling album of 1999 in the United States, only behind Backstreet Boys's Millennium. It stayed on the Billboard 200 for two years until being moved to the Pop Catalog chart.
