Harry Kupfer (born 12 August 1935) is a German director known for his avant-garde productions of Richard Wagner, which often got him into trouble under the former communist regime of East Germany.
For 21 years Kupfer was director of Berlin's Komische Opera. Since the 1970s, he has also been an important director at the Bayreuth Festival. Among his productions available on DVD, is of Zimmermann's Die Soldaten, starring Nancy Shade (1989).
