Psi Upsilon (ΨΥ, Psi U) is the fifth oldest college fraternity in the United States, founded at Union College in 1833. It has chapters at colleges and universities throughout North America. For most of its history, Psi Upsilon, like most social fraternities, limited its membership to only men. Today there are several co-educational Psi Upsilon chapters.
Psi Upsilon also has a foundation that provides scholarships and other financial assistance to students throughout the US and Canada, giving preference to its own members, as well as mentoring and other support services.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, college extracurricular activities were primarily intellectual exercises in the form of literary debates, readings, and oratorical contests.
