''The Daily Cardinal is the sixth oldest daily student newspaper in the United States, located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It began publishing on Monday, April 4, 1892 and is financially and editorially independent. The Cardinal's motto, printed at the bottom of every front page and taken from an 1894 declaration by the university's Board of Regents, is "...the great state University of Wisconsin should ever encourage that continual and fearless sifting and winnowing by which alone the truth can be found." The Daily Cardinal is published Monday through Friday during the academic year in both a tabloid print format and in electronic form on the Web. The daily press run of 10,000 is distributed throughout the campus community. Nearly 200 undergraduate and graduate student volunteers and employees work at the paper.
