The Swordsman is a 1990 Hong Kong wuxia-action film. King Hu is the director credited, but he is alleged to have left the production, and it was finished by a team led by producer Tsui Hark. It is based on the novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer by Jinyong.
Upon the film's initial release in Hong Kong, it was criticised for the casting choice of Sam Hui in the starring role, as the Cantopop singer was perceived as being too "modern" for a period martial arts film.
The film grossed HK $16,052,552 at the Hong Kong box office.
