Victor August Herbert (February 1 1859 – May 26 1924) was a cellist,conductor and composer of light opera. He was prominent among the tin pan alley composers and later a founder of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
Herbert was born in Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Edward Herbert (d. 1861) and Fanny Lover. At age three and a half, shortly after the death of his father, Victor moved to live with his grandmother and playwright grandfather of the Irish novelist, playwright and composer Samuel Lover in Kent, England, where he received encouragement in his creative endeavours. He re-joined his mother in Stuttgart in 1867, where his mother remarried a physician, Carl Schmidt of Langenargen, Germany, and his music was put on hold until a relatively late age.
