William Peter Blatty (born January 7, 1928) is an American writer and filmmaker. He wrote the novel The Exorcist (1971) and the subsequent screenplay version for which he won an Academy Award. Blatty was born in New York City, the son of Lebanese parents Mary (née Mouakad) and Peter Blatty, a carpenter. His father left home when William was six years old.
