Mona J. Simpson is a fiction character in the animated television series The Simpsons. She is voiced by guest star Glenn Close. Mona is the estranged wife of Abe Simpson, and the mother to Homer. Homer believed that his mother, a criminal, was dead, but instead she was on the run and became caught up in the hippie movement. She is known for her rebellious, yet kind spirit. Although she briefly appeared in a flashback in "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" (voiced by Maggie Roswell), she stars in season seven's, "Mother Simpson", the first time she is voiced by Glenn Close. Mona returns for season fifteen's, "My Mother the Carjacker", and appears in the season nineteen episode "Mona Leaves-a", where she dies. While Homer was still a small child in the 1960s, Mona became increasingly caught up in the hippie movement and participated in various acts of political activism, her beliefs being ignited by seeing Joe Namath's long hair during Super Bowl III.
