Alta (help·info) (Áltá or formerly Álaheadju in Northern Sami, Alattio or Alta in Finnish/Kven) is a municipality and town in the county of Finnmark, Norway. Alta was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Talvik was separated from Alta January 1, 1863 - but again merged with Alta January 1, 1964.
