Carinthia (Slovene Koroška) is both a historical and a statistical region in the north of Slovenia. It is occasionally referred to as Slovene Carinthia in English in order to distinguish it from the neighbouring Austrian State of Carinthia. The name derives from the fact that the territory formed part of the Duchy of Carinthia, which belonged to the Habsburg Empire until World War I.
