The red pill refers an actual pill in the film The Matrix. In popular usage, to 'take the red pill' refers to an irrevocable decision to open one's mind to new possibilities, irrespective of the consequences. In Ancient philosophy, Socrates (469-399 BCE)referred to this as the decision to lead an 'examined life'. Others refer to psychdelic drug use as opening one's mind.
