The red pill refers an actual pill in the film The Matrix. In popular usage, to 'take the red pill' refers to an irrevocable decision to open one's mind to new possibilities, irrespective of the consequences. In Ancient philosophy, Socrates (469-399 BCE)referred to this as the decision to lead an 'examined life'. Others refer to psychdelic drug use as opening one's mind. The opposite of the red pill is the blue pill, representing ignorance as bliss. In The Matrix, Neo, a computer hacker, has been searching for the answer to the question "What is the Matrix?" During this search he finds the legendary hacker Morpheus. Morpheus takes Neo to a room and offers him the choice between a red pill and a blue pill. If he takes the red pill he will find out the answer to the question, but his life will never be the same again.
