Exemplary Technologies, Inc.

Exemplary Technologies, later known as Yomu (after the Japanese word for “read”), was a San Francisco-based start-up with the goal of creating an electronic book distribution system. Early prototypes and mockups of its technology were well-received at conferences such as XML ’99 and XTech 2000. However, it never got any substantial funding, and after the arrest of its co-founder and acting CEO, Ben Trafford, on federal stock fraud charges in April 2000, the company reconsidered its position and then closed its doors in mid-2000. Exemplary personnel were active in the development of the XLink, XPointer, XSLT, and XSL standards from the World-Wide Web Consortium, and were founding members of the Open eBook industry group.
