Most books can be easily entered following the instructions in Entering Data for a Book. But for some books, it may not be obvious how they should be entered. The types explained here are: omnibuses; anthologies and collections; fix-ups and mosaic novels; and books with dos-à-dos bindings.
Omnibuses
An omnibus is a book that contains the text of two or more books. Note that an omnibus should not be treated as an edition of the books it contains, but as its own book with one or more editions.
The Raymond Chander Omnibus is an example of an omnibus of four novels that also contains an introduction.
To enter the contents of an omnibus:
Anthologies and Collections
Instructions for entering these types of book can be found in the help topic Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical.
Fix-ups and Mosaic Novels
A "fix-up" is a novel that is composed of two or more previously-published short stories in which the stories have been blended together so that the text reads like a novel, rather than a collection. (This is sometimes accomplished by adding linking material between the stories, making revisions in the text of the stories, or sometimes just by treating the stories as individual chapters.) The term "mosaic novel" is sometimes used in this sense, but can also refer to a collection of distinct stories that are intended to be read as parts of a whole narrative.
Fix-ups should be entered the same way as all books, but to indicate that it was adapted from several stories, you can add the adaptation type to the book:
Return to the Stars is an example of a novel that is a fix-up of four short stories.
Dos-à-dos Books (e.g., Ace Doubles)
A dos-à-dos book is one that contains two books or stories, printed back-to-back, such that the book has two front covers, each upside-down to the other.
- On the topic page for the book edition, add the type publication; this will add the property "contents" to the topic.
- Follow the instructions for "Entering Contents of a Publication" in the help topic Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical.
- From the "book" topic, add the type published work; this will add the property "published in/published as" to the topic.
- Follow the instructions for "Entering the Places a Work Has Been Published" in the help topic Entering the Contents of a Book or Periodical.
- This will add the property "adapted from" to the topic
- Enter the titles of the stories that the book is composed of
- If the stories are already in Freebase, and are typed as stories, you are done
- If not, please click the titles of each story, and add short story to the list of types near the top of the page. You can add author and other publication data as well at this point.
Return to the Stars is an example of a novel that is a fix-up of four short stories.
Dos-à-dos Books (e.g., Ace Doubles)
A dos-à-dos book is one that contains two books or stories, printed back-to-back, such that the book has two front covers, each upside-down to the other.
- The name of the topic should be the titles of both works, separated by a slash (/), e.g., "Sailing to Byzantium/Seven American Nights". Due to the nature of the publication, the order in the title does not matter.
- The authors of both works should be entered in the "author" property.
- The contents and pagination of the book should otherwise be entered the same way as for an omnibus (see above). (Remember, however, that there may be two cover artists!)
