This famous opening sentence of Sabatini's best known work, "Scaramouche" is widely quoted. It is carved over the ornate arch to the Hall of Graduate Studies at Yale.   Legend has it that the architect, who disliked the pseudo-Gothic style in which the building had to be rendered, put it in as his own joke over the entrance.
The
entire quote from the book is actually "He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad, and that was his only patrimony."
